THE HERO'S JOURNEY CONTINUES…. FILOTIMO ULTRA MARATHON OF HONOUR 2021
Based on the triumphant success of the first Ultra Marathon of Honour 2020, the Machi Filotimo Cancer Project hosted our second Ultra Marathon of Honour on 29 May 2021, proudly partnered by BMW Bryanston.
Our Brand Ambassador, Temotio Jacopo, know to us as Temo, ran 115KM in just over 12 hours, from Parys to Bryanston. The run began just outside Parys and ended at BMW Bryanston. This amazing feat of strength and endurance epitomizes the journey of a cancer warrior. Temo took on this challenge to fund the fight against cancer and to honour the taken.
The last 5KM stretch was super exciting as our Hero and his team were joined by our amazing Filotimo Cancer Champions and partners including TransformHERS Fitness Programme and Athletics Club, as they run together, United as One, to cross the finish line and share in the moment, as our Hero delivered a message from Machi to all cancer warriors.
To start off the morning, we hosted the Filotimo Ultra Cyclethon which took place from 08H00 to 12H00. Each session was 50 minutes with a 10 minute break. What better way to stay in shape than to join us for these exciting fitness events, whilst you help to create awareness about cancer and support our survivors.
The event was a huge success and was even featured live on ENCA twice as they interviewed our Brand Ambassador, Temo and his running team on route during the marathon, see links https://www.facebook.com/eNCAnews/videos/162677095870839/
We also livestreamed the entire days events and you can watch this on our YouTube channel which is available on our page. You can view this here https://youtu.be/tCiCLjZtv_A
We have also hosted or first time ever Virtual Online for this Ultra Marathon of Honour, to increase awareness and have as many inspiring sports fanatics join in this epic event and you can choose to run, walk, cycle or even swim to make up your #115KM or #115Minutes. May Month is Skin Cancer Awareness Month and our aim is to create awareness to prevent skin cancer. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in South Africa with about 20 000 reported cases every year and 700 deaths. South Africa has the second highest incidence of skin cancer in the world after Australia. The good news is that skin cancer can be prevented by respecting the sun. The three most common types of skin cancers are basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and malignant melanoma. Melanoma Awareness is represented by the colour black.
According to CANSA, one of our Partnered Institutions, the most of a person’s lifetime exposure to the sun occurs before the age of 18, which makes sun-safe practice an absolute must at pre-schools, primary schools and high schools.
By reaching our target, we will be in a position to continue to do the amazing work that we do, in the spirit of Filotimo, by creating awareness, educating on the signs and symptoms that lead to cancer, its treatment options and providing palliative care to those in need, through our medical partners and institutions. The funds raised for this event will be utilized for education and awareness with a specific focus on Skin Cancer and to grow the Machi Filotimo Cancer Project both Nationally and Internationally.
Help us to continue to do what we do... in the spirit of Filotimo.
You can still make your donation on our BackaBuddy page and support our amazing cause.
