Complex Lymphoedema Therapist

Guided Imagery and Music

I am an Occupational Therapist in private practice, having completed my Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy at Wits in 1990. I chosen to focus on three specific areas, namely Complex Lymphoedema Therapy, Hand and Upper Limb Rehabilitation and Guided Imagery and Music (Bonny Method)

Complex Lymphoedema Therapy:

In 1993 I left to work in the United States in 1993 and while there I developed a special interest in the management of oedema and lymphoedema, attending my first course on this topic in 1997. Since then I have attended a course in the Vodder (German) technique of Lymphoedema Management in South Africa. In 2004 I have completed the more advanced course “Modern Treatment of Lymphoedema” in the USA, and am certified to practice the Casely-Smith (Australian) method of Lymphoedema Management.

In 2019 I completed a course by the UK based Lymphatic Training Academy in the latest techniques called Fluoroscopy Guided Manual Lymphatic Drainage (FG-MLD). I have attended the International Lymphology Congresses in Salvador, Brazil and Sydney, Australia and the European Lymphology Society Congress in Genoa, Italy. This ensures that the treatment my clients receive continues to be of the highest international standards.

As the availability and knowledge of treatment for lymphoedema is not yet well known in South Africa, I have given numerous lectures to medical professionals and public organisations on the topic of the management of lymphoedema, and am a founder member of the Lymphoedema Association of South Africa.

Hand and Upper Limb Rehabilitation:

While in the USA, I also developed a special interest in rehabilitation of the hand and upper limb (ie rehabilitation of the hand, elbow and shoulder). I was awarded a Fellowship in Hand Therapy, which I completed in New Orleans in 1995. I successfully passed the United States Hand Therapy Certification examination in 1997 and have completed more than the continuing education requirements to continue to practice as a Certified Hand (and upper limb) Therapist. In 2000 I left the United States and worked in hand therapy departments in England throughout 2001.

I returned to South Africa in 2002 to open a private practice. I have attended and presented at the South African Society for Hand Surgery Conferences and refresher courses, as well as lecturing at courses for Occupational and Physiotherapists in the field of hand and upper limb rehabilitation. I am currently a member of the South African Society of Hand Therapist and the South African Society for Surgery of the Hand.

Due to the importance of being part of the international community I have attended the International Federation for Hand Therapy and Surgery conferences over the years, most recently in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Most recently I have worked with an Italian Plastic Surgery NGO, The Cute Project Onlus (www.cute-project.org) in Benin and Uganda offering both post-operative and conservative rehabilitation and scar management for the victim of burns and other deformities.

Guided Imagery and Music:

I have come to appreciate each person and client as a unique whole, and that recovery from injury and illness is more than simply a physical process, but involves the body, mind and spirit. As a result, I studied the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music (GIM) and became a Fellow of the Association of Music and Imagery in 2010. GIM is a music-centred psychological therapy that stimulates our innate capacity for healing, growth and transformation.

The GIM process assists clients to work towards spiritual and personal growth, as well working through chronic pain, health problems, painful memories, loss, trauma and stress, terminal illness and dying.

As part of the first group in South Africa to train in this method we have developed a website which offers more information (www.GIM-SA.co.za).

I have attended the international GIM conferences in Spain and Sweden.
